Lenore ’s conquest of Hector across the season playact into the serial publication ’ wider melodic theme about deception and forlornness , and makes for one of the more insidious arcs of the show so far . But as she whiles away her time in Styria ’s dungeons tempting Isaac into her dominion , Striga , Morana , and Carmilla ’s backchat between each other is wonderfully vampy ( no-count , not sorry ) . There ’s a real sense of humanity given to each of them , whether it ’s the warmth of Morana and Striga ’s love for each other , or just the sisterly banter as they jab and express mirth . If Castlevania ’s past scoundrel relationship were defined by their emotional space and their restless tension , there ’s something fascinating to be face by a major terror that feel as united and happy with each other as our hero do .

There are perhaps few histrion in the world you could stargaze of performing Warren Ellis dialog more thanBill Nighy , so from the commencement , season three ’s gain of the cryptical Saint Germain and his pursuit was a delicious thing . But watching Germain ’s arc procession over season three as Nighy has to dance between cracking student and tragical person made for one of the time of year ’s most compelling journeys .

It lacks the more oblique picture game nostalgia of last season ’s excellent battle for Dracula ’s castle — although there areplenty of cool nodsto turn and power from the secret plan , particularly with Sypha ’s gloriously expanded repertory — and it does n’t quite have as much to say about our characters , but it reach up for it with just being wall - to - wall bonkers action . Even in their relatively brusk prison term together , Trevor and Sypha have become much more exponentially powerful as a fight unit , as a twain and alone , unleashing everything they can at the monstrous nighttime crawler horde emerging from the Infinite Corridor . Sypha using her flame to take flight while slicing up wing daimon with well - timed ice shields ? Trevor breaking out both his morningstar whip and his trustworthy leather original to perform a flurry of black eye that looked like a hybridisation between concert dance and a battle Mexican valium workout ?

Awesome .

One of the most interesting aspects of this season was always going to be about how it handled the current absence of what is in all probability Castlevania ’s most essential constituent : Dracula . With Vlad Tepes laid first gear at Alucard ’s manus at the end of season two , much of time of year three is about the vacuum left behind by his decease , on a macro worldview . He tries to navigate life as the dual protector of Dracula ’s Castle and the Belmont Crypt alone , lecture to adorably manus - crafted doll of his dependable friends — but the reaching of Taka and Sumi ( Toru Uchikado and Rila Fukushima , severally ) as potential young educatee , and how hard Alucard falls for them both , speaks to the cataclysm of just how crushingly alone he feel . And speaking of that loneliness , Castlevania claim a compellingly hard turn in its denouement this time of year that serves as a shockingly blunt and terrible monitor of not just how roughshod this mankind really is , but what the loneliness in it can really do to multitude . As Sypha , Trevor , and Saint Germain ’s battle at the priory number to a finale , what should feel like a victory ( a reward for our courageous adventuring heroes Belnades and Belmont ! ) suddenly unravels before their very eyes . After escaping , they rapidly pick up the town judge ( Jason Isaacs ) bleeding out in the wake of the slaughter at the priory . They ’d been working alongside him in their probe , but he was secretly just as filthy as the cultists he ’d so detested , using his position as the township ’s leader to maliciously send its children to their death .

As they bequeath the now ruined town , there ’s the cold reminder that sometimes the monsters of Castlevania ’s world are not always as actual as they seem . But for Sypha and Trevor , it ’s a monitor that asks them to examine the heroism of their adventures . Would Lindenfeld have been doomed if they had n’t rolled into town as venturer eager for a Modern pursuance ? Did they just hasten the rot to its inevitable , bloody end , or would they have been better off blissfully ignorant of the on-key duskiness footle in its shadow ?

And it ’s not just Sypha and Trevor that are left buffetted . Hector ’s crippling closing off leads to him being horrifically enslaved by Lenore ’s magicks , dooming him to servitude for the offence of giving into his desire to not need to be alone . At Dracula ’s castling , Alucard ’s blossoming relationship with Taka and Sumi ends with tragedy when his own desire to keep his new friend from lead on their vampire - hunting seeking drives the pair into a bloody , horrible end after they assume ill intent on his part . Of all our characters , it ’s only really the villains that come out unharmed — but even then , that ’s only because they ’re in this period of scheming rather than action . Their dream are just as unrealized right now as those of our torpedo .

This sudden prostration does n’t feel like an out - of - nowhere tonic slide — but just a admonisher of how unjustly cruel Castlevania ’s world has always been . Some of that had been lost with our hero ’s triumph over Dracula , but really , it was always there — Vlad Tepes ’ wretched vengeancethat started this all off was bear out of a humanity of hoi polloi unable to trust , unable to open themselves to unexampled multitude or expect the better of those different to them . We Didn’t Love…

One of the most interesting differences between Castlevania ’s first and second seasons was the latter’smuch more subduedapproach , pulling forth from the action - heavy lightning pace its debut ’s truncated runtime allowed for . Its third time of year does much the same , but the arras afforded by its grander sense of shell — and because its myriad plotlines are so much further sprawled out and sequester by that scurf — also means that a dumb pace sometimes works against it .

The detachment of our submarine sandwich and our baddie mean that , unlike last time of year ’s tight nidus on Dracula ’s Court and what Sypha , Alucard , and Trevor were up to , there are manner more plotlines to draw on this time around , and moving easy about each one of them as the show progresses give plenty of time for character work . But it feels less like you ’re building to one unmarried climax and more wait for multiple climaxes to go off — and no , we ’re not babble out about what Lenore , Hector , Alucard , Taka , and Sumi get up to in their bedrooms in the last episode!—yet not all of them actually get to do so .

Perhaps the most disappointingly leave - behind arc this time of year thanks to this is Isaac ’s storyline . While he ’s a perpetual backdrop the season hangs itself on — he have plenty of screentime , and like every other tale intertwined here his story of regret and vengeance ties into the season ’s wider composition about lonesomeness and the integral mercilessness of man ’s world — there ’s small in the way of forward motion as he carves a bloody path towards Styria and retaliation against Hector . Of all the narration arcs in time of year three , Isaac feels the one most disjunct of all .

By the sentence everything elsewhere is beginning to ramp up to a departure , Isaac ’s storyline feels like it just stops , a moment of respite for him having ransacked a urban center of enslaved humanity and turned them into fodder for his Night Creature host while everyone else gets to build to a much more dramatic conclusion . It ’s reset the series is playing a much farsighted game with the lineament , sure , but with there being at least some semblance of closure across the board in season three ’s storytelling ( stark as it was ) , the fact that there was n’t really time to afford him something exchangeable just made it feel like his presence was narrative bicycle turning at prison term .
