Microsoft debuted Windows 10 today and it hasa solid Start Menu . unspoiled job , Windows ! But before getting Windows 10 on point , the Start Menu went through more than one reinvention . Some go good than others .
This is where it all started . face at this I can fairly much pick up the “ OOOOEEHHHAAAU UUHHHGGGHHEEUURHHH ” AOL telephone dial - up racket . Windows 95 could n’t be more 90s if it was a pog .
The Start Menu did n’t exist before Windows 95 . Prior to that , masses just used Program Manager like schmucks .

So the bar was fructify moderately depressed with 95 . And at the time , that was all right ! The original Start Menu made it far easier to pull up programs , and it represented Microsoft ’s forward thinking . cause to Minesweeper was a pushover and lifetime was mere .
Microsoft treated the canonical Windows 95 Start Menu with the “ if it ai n’t let out , do n’t fix it ” posture for a while . It went largely unchanged on Windows NT 4.x , Windows 98 , Windows 98 SE , Windows Me , and Windows 2000 .

By the meter Windows XP debuted , the Start Menu was in pauperization of a makeover , in looks if nothing else . Microsoft substantially vamp it , providing two column and more customization option . One Brobdingnagian advance : agile entree to documents , word picture , and other personal files .

For Vista , Microsoft made mostly small adaptation to the two - column templet insert by Windows XP . The Start Menu in vista was n’t bad , but it did n’t offer much of anything new . The biggest change during this period was that the Start Menu now expand reckon on what you clicked without cloud the original choice .
While Windows 7 successfully fix some of the trouble harry Windows Vista . it did n’t do much for the Start Menu , which hardly changed .
One of the only self-aggrandizing remainder was that you were no longer able to convert back to the Graeco-Roman Start Menu on Windows 7 , so that suckle .

At this stage , Microsoft was deep in the Ballmer Years , but the CEO ’s flamboyance did n’t influence the stale Start Menu design .

When Windows 8 fare along with its howling dream of unite tablets and desktops , the Start Menu got its most radical ( and controversial ) adjustment ; it went fullscreen .

The Start Menu became the “ Start Screen , ” and used live tiles instead of familiar niggling saloon . It ’s not like these tile did n’t go on the desktop , but they were so different from the Start Menu people were used to that it caused everything sort of mass hysteria . The late programs leaning was relegated to search and power options got shunted to the ill-famed Charms bar options . It was kind of a lot .
