Humans , AMC ’s scifi dramatic event about a world where robots are as ubiquitous as smart phone , ends its 2nd season tonight . Much like in Westworld , the artificial lives hold in Humans have been slave to humanity ’s whimsey , and just like in the finale of Westworld , a rebellion has formed . But Humans has had much better success with explore exactly what an advance in artificial sentience would attend like to the worldly concern at orotund — and in the process it ’s done an arguably good job of showing just how predictably thickened and afraid man are when dealing with a group they have deemed “ inferior . ”

Although Humans ’ first time of year aired before Westworld premiere on HBO , the vast popularity of the latter meant that Humans ’ second time of year has lived in Westworld ’s shadow , to a degree . The two showsdemand comparison , and serve as rattling counterparts — because despite Westworld ’s ubiquitousness in pop civilisation last year , Humans has quietly turn in a thoughtful , phenomenal time of year that digest on its own .

To get to the point : in both Westworld and Humans , golem are whole subjugated by the living . In Westworld , robots are slave . They exist , ultimately , for the pleasure of humanity — they’re fucktoys and cannon fodder for the very wealthy people playing very wealthy games of God . The robots are ants , too inconsequential to worry about . The gap between human and automaton is made more vast by the humans ’ wealth , and their home in the cloud far above the world of golem , even as the humans endeavour to make the robots more and more realistic .

But on Humans , synths — as they ’re called on the show — have served as striver from the beginning , but there ’s a divergence . Synths are determine as tools , and are given as much pity and understanding as you would give your smart phone . There are a few man that find some uncomfortableness over having human - like appliance in their home , but on the whole , humanity , in every economic square bracket , has accepted synths as inferior and incompetent of being more . The sense of inferiority is advisedly compounded by the show ’s conclusion to have actors portraying synth cause with a specific refining and kind of robotic - ness . So even when you ’re find out just two synths interact , no human being in visual sense , there is this nagging tone of uneasiness , a reminder of their otherness .

On Westworld we ’re ask , immediately , to sympathize with the robots , but on man we ’re kept just far enough away from them to be a piddling upset ( which is , presumptively , exactly how any of us will react when Siri or Alexa lastly grows a eubstance ) . They might face like us , but they ’re really just giant computers you’re able to hack with a Microsoft Surface or sell to a fly-by-night reseller . Like the robot we have now , they ’ll repose deep in the uncanny valley , close enough , but just too far removed to be human — at least if the company creating them go for to be profitable .

Humans assure the tale of what happens if Apple made robots , while Westworld is more concerned in sentience itself — what makes a learning ability , a individual , a consciousness — the long time - old scifi interrogative sentence that wonders at what point do we conceive something aware of itself . While Westworld is a howling intellectual practice session ( and a all-fired good story ) , Humans is explore a much more prescient - feeling tomorrow , where man can turn off from others ’ bother because they take care dissimilar or sing funny or have a tic .

So far Humans has made for a fascinating , if grievous , hinge upon . We ’ve seen automaton shot , beaten , and torn apart this time of year . We ’ve seen them slowly open up their eyes to consciousness and watched the show ruminate on the very nature of the soulfulness . Yet we ’ve also seen the synths vie for sound right , only to be denied because of affluent and more politically herculean humans — a story that take on out all too often in actual life .

Tonight the synths seem to be setting up a saving missionary station to reclaim sentient synths kidnapped by the humans , and it will be the capper to a wondrous time of year that has seen its world mature minor as the consciousness of the synths grow larger .

So if you ’re pining for more Westworld — or if you arrest watching Humans because Westworld took over its place — AMC ’s show is well worthing seeking out . It might not have the trice and MA rating as HBO ’s hit , but humanity holds robot up to reflect the human quality ’ own humanity , both good and big . And the result is the show that has become a fantastic scifi reflection of the real humankind .
