Marvel ’s latest superhero movie , Ant - Man , is very well made . It has some serious action and a few really clever bite . There are some funny parts , along with some not - that - funny part . This movie pretty much get the Book of Job done . But it ’s not peculiarly memorable , or especially astonishing .

In a sense , Ant - Man shows how far superhero films have come . If this story , about an ex-husband - convict who inherits a suit that lets him shrink and talk to pismire , had come out seven or eight years ago , it might have felt like a bigger softwood . The principal thing Ant - Man has going for it is that it ’s pretty well made and avoids a lot of the pitfalls of the previous generation of superhero films .
But now , after over 100 superhero movies — let in a late linebacker blitzing of four or five heavy one per twelvemonth in the United States alone — Ant - Man feel merely pretty right . There ’s nothing , in finicky , to commend this moving-picture show over the dozens of others you could watch . Meanwhile , the relationship between Hank and Hope is even unelaborated , and at no period do they feel like father and daughter , estranged or otherwise .
At this point , you ’re credibly order , “ Why do I deal if this moving-picture show has an emotional core ? Or characters with intimate lives , or whatever ? ” Which is a sensible spot — you’re going to this film to see a cat in a fancy motorcycle case head-shrinker and then utilise his relative mass and persuasiveness to perforate regular - sizing people on the face . And on that front , the film pretty much delivers . There ’s fate of form - changing and punching , and it ’s playfulness to watch .
But the male parent - daughter story is plain the thing that ’s supposed to advance this above being a by - the - numbers superhero source story , and it ’s just not there . And that brings us to the other problem — some of the humor in this celluloid really depends on us being invested in the eccentric , to a stage that the flick does n’t make .
Basically , this flick is a comedy , and it ’s funny about half the time . When it plays with shape - modify gags , or the problems of an x - con trying to hold his job at Baskin Robbins , or some slap-up tweaks on the “ heist film ” figure of speech , it ’s mostly funny . There are a few really inspired run gags in the film . But when Ant - Man judge to do persona - based humor , the deficiency of existent eccentric get in the way . Another problem : The moving picture ’s scoundrel , Darren , is kind of a non - entity , although he does get one or two good scenes .
Do n’t get me wrong — I enjoyed Ant - Man for what it was . It ’s a play enough film , with solid pacing , and some nerveless moments . It ’s just the least memorable superhero moving picture I ’ve seen in quite some clock time . Blame Marvel : The past seven or eight years of Marvel film have generally expanded the cathode-ray oscilloscope of the writing style , mostly for estimable and occasionally for ill . And in the process , they ’ve raised the standard for everybody . A picture like Ant - Man find like an ambitionless throwback .
That tell , Ant - Man does have some characters who stick in your creative thinker and win your heart : the ants . The ants pretty much slip this film , even as they avail Paul Rudd to steal the McGuffin from the McGuffin factory . The character design of the minor United States Army of emmet who accompany Ant - Man on his delegacy is an awing triumph , and they really feel like they have personalities and life to them . The flick does an admirable job of show us the different kinds of ants that Scott works with , include bullet ant and unhinged emmet , and making us appreciate their formic adorableness .
Also , the most memorable natural action in the photographic film involves the ants doing cool coordinated stunt to help Ant - Man out of some baffling situation or another . Along with a few bravura scene of Ant - Man growing and shrink and using his varying size of it to get the drop-off on people , the ants are the master thing that ’s visually unequaled and cool about this film .
All Ant - Man needed was more work on the characters and the principal relationships , and you could have had something special . As it is , though , “ superhero ancestry story that ’s also a heist flick ” feel like a mash - up of two overused genres , not something new and impudent in its own rightfulness . The effect is a pretty good flick , but not something that ’s going to stick with me .
