When Castiel finally stops moping and feeling shamed for everything , he gets back to being the ass - kicker we know and love . Last Nox ’s scene of Castiel kicking ass was the high spot of the Supernatural midseason finale . The whole installment was extremely entertaining , but also feel very much like a re - run .

In a nutshell , last night ’s midseason finale was all angels , all the fourth dimension . The angels who fall to Earth are having a civic war , with a more corporate camarilla lead by Bartholomew and a camarilla led by the “ street tough ” angel Malachi . ( bewilderingly , the “ street tough ” angel has a overnice woman ’s consort on his side , and the more corporal sect includes a deal of rockers . ) We see lots of entertainingly violent saint hit and counter - hits , and we get the sensation that the Angel are just going to wipe each other out , and maybe the major planet along with them .
Castiel gets pull into this plot , first when he ’s investigating along with Sam and Dean , and later when he meets a overnice unaligned fae saint , who gets captured and killed by Malachi . Malachi ’s cat are go to torture Castiel for info on Metatron , the put down angel who expelled all the other angels from Heaven — but then it turns out Malachi ’s ripe - bridge player torturer just wants to startle ship and join Metatron ’s gang . Which leads to Castiel ’s amazing scene of raw cunning and slaying , culminating in Castiel steal the backer ’s grace with a individual draft .
Also love Castiel confessing that he ’s become a “ tike ” and come to the same level as the other war angels . courteous stuff .
Meanwhile , after vague mite all midseason that the holy person inhabiting Sam is n’t what he seems , we notice out he ’s not Ezekiel — he ’s Gadriel , the angel who was locked up for let the serpent into the Garden of Eden . And Gadriel gets what that other backer want — he ’s enroll by Metatron , who ’s willy-nilly back on Earth because he got bored alone in Heaven . Metatron has some supremely creepy-crawly , funny shot where he talks about creating a raw Heaven , without all those functionary angels , or any of the silly Angel Falls . And he fundamentally wants to rule the novel Heaven , but he wo n’t be call God — instead , you call him X. ( Huh ? )
I experience like the episode is grope for some cosmologic satire here :
The instalment culminates in Dean realizing , too former , that Gadriel is not to be trusted , and that it may be too late to get him out of Sam ’s body , where he ’s been for the preceding nine episodes . Dean attempt to set a trap for Gadriel , but it backfire , and we discover that Gadriel has a mission from Metatron : kill Kevin the prophet , the one person who could threaten Metatron ’s plans by trace some brand newfangled unreadable text on the Angel Tablet .
The takeout of the installment is that Dean has screwed everything up , yet again — he ’s lost Sam , who apparently is just Gadriel ’s vessel now . And right after Dean assured Kevin that hope Dean wo n’t get Kevin “ screwed ” this prison term , Kevin is royally and for good screwed . Dean has go from being the show ’s expansive mouthpiece for never giving up and hanging on to gratuitous will , to being the guy who make terrible choice after horrific pick , because he ca n’t let his chum go .
In any case , this was a superfun episode , that nevertheless mat a bit warmed - over . The holy man civil war felt very much like the last saint polite war . And the Earthbound angels are n’t , at this point , feeling that much different than the Leviathans a couple years ago . Sam is possessed yet again — this is the third or fourth metre that Sam has n’t been Sam . Castiel is once again getting his hands dirty to try out and clean up a mess he helped create .
There ’s nothing wrong with the tune , or how it ’s being spiel — it ’s just that the show has played this tune well in the past .
Also , I ’m not trusted what the angels present any more . They used to have a legitimate point of view , believe that they were fulfilling God ’s plan in God ’s absence seizure . Now they just seem like another set of supernatural mooks who look human most of the time — slimly harder to bolt down than demon but not that much harder . We have n’t seen enough of Bartholomew for him to find like a meaningful grapheme , and Malachi is young as of this episode . It ’s also kind of random that the crony have Crowley in their dungeon but we have n’t even seen him in a few weeks , and the Abaddon plotline is ostensibly on clutches .
All in all , Supernatural is still a play show , but it ’s like when your favorite band from 10 years ago comes to town and wreak all their greatest hit from 10 year ago . You still get out the lighter and all , but it ’s not like it ’ll be as good as when they were tour on that stuff in good order after it first came out .
