The Lone Wolf serial publication may have been the apex of the 80 “ choose your own adventure ” craze , combining non - linear novel with biz stats and dice pealing . They were essentially solitaire RPGs , so their reinvention as an actual RPG makes perfect sense .
I distinctly remember playing through the Lone Wolf books around old age 11 or 12 , sit around on the sofa in the family living room , carefully noting my stats on a piece of scrap paper , loving the idea of a persistent fictitious character with evolving stats , and realizing it was like playing D&D by myself . Sadly , when the furcate narration furor pass off , a gang of Lone Wolf books went unpublished .
Since then the books have been back in photographic print , some of the lost books were last printed ( primarily thanks to a popularity spike in Europe ) , and Mongoose Publishing even made two tabletop RPGs base on Lone Wolf , one a D20 biz , the other using an original system . Those are both no longer in mark .

move into Cubicle 7 , a British RPG publisher get it on for the Doctor Who and The One Ring RPGs . They ’re mold with Lone Wolf creator Joe Dever to create a new RPG based on the humankind of Magnamund , where monk - like Kai Lords battle the forces of dark . Like the original books , this Lone Wolf RPG is perfect for founder , bit by bit increasing in complexness as you become more conversant with the rules and the world .
The Lone Wolf Kickstarteris already quite successful , with just a few days rest . I spoke to Jon Hodgson of Cubicle 7 to get some details about Lone Wolf .
io9 : How does the new system compare to earlier RPGs ground on Lone Wolf ?

Jon Hodgson : We bug out at a exchangeable item – using the Lone Wolf solo game books as our inspiration and primal texts . From there though we ’re heading in a singular Cubicle 7 direction . The Lone Wolf Adventure game bed in depth and width as you play , building the arrangement from the introductory solo secret plan book rules , which are a capital starting point for absolute beginner and younger players , to a really great rpg system with all the option you ’d require .
We ’re offeringa lot of option at character generationfor where your character get along from , what their use is , even within the Kai order as part of the core package set . With traits and skills , and the Kai ’s Favour score , case become really unparalleled .
A singular feature of the boxed set is random number generation – something fondly remembered by Lone Wolf officianados . Because the original game books did n’t derive with die you used a Random routine Table at the back of the book to mother random numbers from 1 to 10 . We ’re revisit that with counter that you flip out into the corner lid , which has a Random Number Table print into it . you’re able to of course of instruction just use a regular ten sided die if you detest playfulness !

io9 : What do you have planned for supplements and expansions ?
Jon Hodgson : We ’re bring some familiar sounding supplements , which we ’re seeing as something akin to “ theater director ’s cuts ” of previous editions :
The Terror of the Darklords campaign for example has been completely reworked by Joe Dever , and will be appearing with the full Cubicle 7 treatment .

Sommerlund [ the kingdom where most Lone Wolf adventures take place ] shares some content with premature iterations , because Magnamund is still the same place setting we grew up with , but again has been heavily make over by Joe , and will contain as much stuff again , with raw fabric in every section . If you ’ve followed our One Ring or Doctor Who line you ’ll make out we ’re all about packing in material that ’s useable at the gaming board – game hooks , NPCs , adventure locations and so on .
Heroes of Magnamund is wholly young because of the different means we ’re approach the system of rules with a lot more options for character generation .
The Lone Wolf Adventure Game is just the start of the journey – we very much see the boxed in set as the starting point for getting a great roleplaying game into stores in front of as many potential roleplayers as possible .

io9 : Are there any programme to create books in the original Lone Wolf elan ?
Jon Hodgson : We ’re currently focalize on the Lone Wolf Adventure Game , that brings a multiplayer act game experience to as many new gamers as we can , whilst gratifyingly chafe that Magnamund itchiness for more seasoned gamers .
