daylight of the Dead is everywhere these day ; calaveras have been adopted by everyone from strong-armer to Pixar . But for The Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez , the holiday is n’t just about the cool visuals ; it ’s also intensely personal .
During the Book of Life panel at San Diego Comic - Con , Gutierrez and Book of Life manufacturer Guillermo del Toro showed off a laggard for their upcoming reanimate film cut specifically for the Comic - Con hearing . We were impressed by the first trailerwhen we follow it on our laptops , but construe it on the big screen during the panel was something else whole . “ My grandfather pronounce to me , ‘ Jorgito , never let the truth get in the path of a good story , ' ” Gutierrez recite the bunch . He say that The Book of Life is a collection of all the stories of his family . “ It ’s sort of a formula book of all the stories I heard growing up . ”
Del Toro say that he became involved after Gutierrez stopped by his menage with a feeding bottle of tequila . “ He showed up with all the nontextual matter and a slant for the movie , ” said del Toro . “ We had dandy chemistry . ” He wanted to develop the film himself because he felt it was something special . “ We have to protect this child so that it can make it to the end of the line as beautiful and as pure as it could be . ”
For Gutierrez , The Book of Life is an intensely personal film , meshing everything that he have sex — videogames , opera , the English - language music he grew up listening to , even churros . But Day of the Dead is the key . Gutierrez take note that a slew of people espouse the trappings of Day of the Dead ( and he does n’t seem to take issue with folks who simply bask the image connect with the holiday ) , but they often discount the spirit of the holiday , which is particularly near to his heart . “ I got marry on solar day of the drained because I wanted my best admirer who passed away to be my serious man and I wanted my class to be there . ”
