severely , I need to love Falling Skies , and I have a lot of philia for the show ’s characters and conception — but I do n’t understand what this show ’s storyline is about . Last night ’s sequence , in particular left me wondering whether this show ’s storyline is just one colossal alien shaggy dog .

pillager ahead …

In a nutshell , last night ’s Falling Skies disposed , plainly once and for all , of the “ mole ” plot line along with the “ What ’s going on with Hal ? ” plot line . ( Unless they actually root for something cagy and the mole is actually Anthony or the young President Peralta , in which example hat off to them . ) Hal is apparently the mole who ’s been causing all this trouble , but he was under the ascendancy of Karen the Overlord . In last night ’s episode , Hal takes his father surety and then gets catch and eventually cured of his thinker - control eyebug via lashings of smaller , ickier eyebugs . And then all four Mason guy go off on hogback to find the missing Anne and babe Alexis .

We ’re now six episodes into a ten - sequence season , and between the “ mole ” and “ Hal ” storylines , a ton of screentime has been spend on something that apparently was n’t really function anywhere .

And meanwhile , you have to wonder what the season ’s grown arc actually is about . Like , are the Volm crucial ? You acknowledge , those bubble - direct aliens who point up at the end of season two and have scarcely been seen since ?

aside from one peachy prospect where Cochise talks about bloom we ’ve never really gotten a sense of what the Volm even say they require . The show keeps telling us not to hope the Volm — but meanwhile , we ’ve never even been given a exclusive reason why you ’d trust them in the first place . It ’s not even like the show is say us “ Do n’t believe Count Evil von Evilstein , ” it ’s more like the show is say , “ Do n’t trust Count Evil who weave through the background of one shot three sequence again . ” My response is n’t , “ Well , duh . ” It ’s , “ Who ? ”

And what about Karen the Overlord — is she the Big Bad this season ? It sure seems like she ’s being set up to be , but we ’ve scantily seen her since she had glowing - spine sex several sequence ago . We hear a lot about her , and apparently she was stuffy enough to Charleston to have regular assemblage with Evil Hal — but we ’ve seen almost nothing of her lately .

I could go on and on . But forget about the fact that this show has a yawning interruption between the things it tells us are important , versus the things it spends prison term on . There ’s a bigger trouble than that .

I do n’t know , thematically , what this show is about — except , in a vague sense , “ syndicate is crucial . ” Take Charleston — what does it comprise ? In time of year two , Charleston seemed to stand for a false sensory faculty of security , with its citizen assume they could stay off the aliens ’ radar and not get flunk back to the stone eld . But in season three , we ’ve seen Tom become chairwoman , fiddle his responsibilities , and finally resign . When I saw Tom relinquish as president last night , was I hypothesize to feel like that was a momentous thing ? He did give a twosome nice address here and there — but the whole “ Mason family allow Charleston ” affair did n’t bear the free weight that it was probably supposed to . What are they pass on behind here ?

I feel like Falling Skies was originally pitched as “ gritty warfare dramatic play fromthe writer of Saving Private Ryan , ” but also “ post - apocalyptic narrative about how we hold on to civilisation and/or reconstruct social mental hospital . ” To that goal , it would have been nice to see Tom Mason in reality trying to govern , and reach the problematic decisions about feed the people of Charleston — do they have farm ? What do they do for food for thought ? — while also resist off exotic attack .

I want to be severe on Falling Skies because it has so much amazing potential difference — last night ’s sequence had one or two really great scene , notably the one where Pope is taking bets on the outcome of the Hal - and - Tom standoff and then Col Weaver walks in to order a whiskey . really great here and now of drama , and Pope ’s line about “ If there ’s any funny job , take the comedy right out of it ” is priceless . Last workweek ’s instalment was bleak and character - focused .

But you have to inquire if anybody work on the show has model down and calculate out what story they ’re telling here .
