A group of artists and designer , including50 Cyborgs projectorganizer Tim Maly , have proposed a radical approximation to solve Toronto ’s city provision job . argufy the previous metropolis , and just build a new one on top . Call it Upper Toronto .

Maly and collaborator Jacob Zimmer , who run performance companySmall Wooden Shoe , have just started give a series of lecture in Toronto to excuse their project and feel collaborators . Inspired by science fiction and a sure amount of thwarting with Toronto ’s urban planning cognitive process , they hope to have a fully - realized and completely nonsensical proposal of marriage put together soon .
Their destination ? To go on a tour of duty where they convince people to write to local functionary and demand a referendum on the proposal .
Tim Maly told us via email :
The conceit is that we ’re lam the project as an esthetic and theatrical exercise that parallels the innovation and sales utilization that leads to genuine development being built . Theatre performers often dream of world - switch performances and meanwhile you have these real worldly concern - commute performances which are the sales agreement pitching and presentations that result in whole neighbourhoods being dismantle and rebuild .
All of this is being done with the sympathy that we are purposefully advise something impractical and to some extent completely insane . It ’s a dream of expansive urban planning in a city that ’s for the most part given up on such things ( our city just respond to a year of record transit ridership by announcing fare hikes and swing to services and the cancellation of a massive light track plan ) .
We see three phases to the undertaking .
Phase 1 is what Jacob and I have embarked on now , with a series of public lectures and shop where we seek stimulus from the public about what kind of goal and dream Upper Toronto should personify .
Phase 2 is a period of cloistered institution . We ’ll work with a team of collaborators to design Upper Toronto . We ’re hoping for input from artists , applied scientist , architects , urban planners , public health people , the stateless , the plentiful and so on and so on .
Phase 3 will be a second public presentation . This will be a multimedia system affair with a site , lecturing etc . but the focus will be a bemock up show room with alive performer / salespeople who will make for audiences on a kind of tour whose goal is to win over them to write their city councillor demanding a referendum on the marriage offer .
This should be a demented good time .
