dinosaur are often painted as predatory animal , chasing down everything from pocket-sized dinosaur to Jeff Goldblum , but we often overlook their theatrical role as prey . Many dinosaurs were dinner for freehanded dinosaurs , but as a captivating new fossil reveals , some were tiffin for early mammalian , too .

The strange and rare fogy is 125 million years sure-enough and shows two creature lock in mortal combat as a carnivorous mammal attacked a larger plant - eat dinosaur .   According to co - author on a new study , Dr Jordan Mallon , who is a palaeobiologist with the Canadian Museum of Nature , it ’s among the first pieces of evidence to show a mammal predating on a dinosaur , rather than the other agency around .

“ I think what ’s most interesting is the fact that this new fossil show that bionomic interactions between dinosaur and mammals went both ways ; it was n’t just the larger dinosaurs eating the low mammals , ” Mallon said to IFLScience . “ Sometimes , mammal were capable of eating dinosaurs – even nearly in full grown one – too . ”

The dinosaur being preyed on is a species ofPsittacosaurus , a grouping of plant - wipe out dinosaurs that became the proud owners of thefirst known fossilized butt orificeback in 2021 . In animation , they were about the size of a with child dog , which does n’t sound all that impressive until you con that the mammalian coinage hunting it , Repenomamus robustus , was only the size of a badger . Pretty mini compared to the boastful mammals live today , but it was one of the expectant alert during the Cretaceous when mammals had n’t yet predominate the landscape .

We were curious to do it how the dentition of a Wisconsinite - similar animal would fare against the hide of aPsittacosaurus , something you might imagine to be a bit leathery . However , as Mallon explained , they probably were n’t too knotty a menu particular .

“ Interesting question ! Although we have found cutis impressions fromPsittacosaurusbefore , we do n’t have any sense for how thick the skin was . This was a relatively small dinosaur , so I do n’t recollect it would have been particularly thick - skinned in the style that today ’s turgid elephant or hippopotamus are . Repenomamuswas a known carnivore , so I think it was certainly capable of tearing through flesh – even that of dinosaurs . ”

The curious dodo was retrieved from China ’s Liaoning Province in 2012 , from an area nicknamed “ China ’s DinosaurPompeii ” . Both skeleton are nearly all over and come up from an area known as the Liujitun dodo bed where many fossils of dinosaur , small mammal , lizard , and amphibian were buried after volcanic clap unleashed mudslide and deluges of debris .

We can see this in the volcanic fabric that was found in the rock intercellular substance of the study ’s dodo , as confirmed by mineralogist Dr Aaron Lussier at the Canadian Museum of Nature . It might vocalise like something of a good fortune to charm a moment like this in the fogy record , but it ’s not alone .

“ To keep up an fundamental interaction like this one , it ’s necessary to inhume the individuals rapidly , ” said Mallon . “ In the case of the animals described in our field , they were entomb by a swift mudslide consisting mostly of volcanic ash and detritus . There ’s [ also ] a famous distich of ' fighting dinosaurs ' from the Gobi desert that were bury short in a dune collapse . ”

If onlyRepenomamus robustushad known , it pays to keep one oculus on the view while you tuck into a dinosaur .
