Fans were giddy and skittish as they sat down to view J.J. Abrams ’ Star Wars : The Force Awakens in 2015 , not sure what to expect from the showtime of a new trilogy . The opening night scene was nothing short of dramatic , but an alternative fan - animated translation based on Abrams ’ storyboards is arguably even more so .
Animator Tim Gray wrote about his creation on YouTube , “ The original concept for The Force Awakens opening was very different to what finally made it to sieve . Using the original storyboards by J.J. Abrams , I have attempted to enamour what this could have looked like . ”
Presumably , the storyboards are from one of themany TFA - related bookswhich accompany the release of the film . They appear to pick up sooner in the story , with the fight that resulted in all those Empire ships crashing on Jakku . Gray ’s invigoration starts just as the classic scroll is rolling off the screen . Take a looking at :

It certainly makes for some big visuals , but I can see why Abrams and the squad felt it was unnecessary . The version we saw in dramatic art get us aright into the current action and kicks off the tale well .
