In the sixties , NASA ’s astronauts were the cool , calm , and collect faces of the outer space program who represented American values – most were tie and had some variety of spiritual association . NASA ’s public thing agency took great pain to keep its astronauts ’ range sportsmanlike , but they were still valet de chambre who occasionally cursed when faced with a bad state of affairs . As NASA gathered steam and took a firm lieu in the public centre , the organisation had a business breed up some of the less radio- and fellowship - favorable transmittal .
Every so often , astronaut draw a blank that their every word was broadcast live throughout the world . Some slip - ups , like Tom Stafford ’s on Apollo 10 , were easier to get across .
Four days , four hours , and forty - four proceedings after launching , Commander Stafford and Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan were require the LM Snoopy to a low-pitched lunar sphere ; Command Module pilot John Young remained in the CM Charlie Brown . As Snoopy make it over the lunar Earth’s surface , Stafford and Cernan film pictures of surface features to give future crew a good idea of the terrain they ’d be face when coming in for a landing place . ( effigy : Tom Stafford poses with his LM ’s namesake , Snoopy . 1969 . )

At one point , Stafford recognized a landmark crater , Censorinus A. He was momentarily distracted by the spectacular phantasm and giant boulders surrounding the crater . “ I ’ve got Censorinus A right here , ” he said out aloud to the world , “ bigger than shit ! ”
A shocked reporter mind to the transmission in commission control turned to spaceman Jack Schmitt . “ What did Colonel Stafford just say ? ” retrieve quickly , Schmitt covered for his fellow worker and replied “ He said , ‘ Oh , there ’s Censorinus … big than Schmitt ! ' ”
Stafford ’s was an isolated incident , but some astronauts were harder to ban . One in special had the unfortunate habit of filling blank when his mind wandered with profanities . This pose a problem for NASA – with the worldly concern watching spaceman walk around the lunar aerofoil , how could the organization be sure the his transmissions from the Moon would be family - friendly ? In set for his mission , NASA had the astronaut hypnotized . Rather than swear , a shrink put the estimation in his head that he would rather seethe when his mind divagate . The transfixed astronaut is rarely name , but only one military personnel can be hear hum as he skipps across the lunar surface . infection from Commander Pete Conrad are punctuated with “ dum de dum dum dum ” and “ dum do do do , do do ” making him the likliest candidate .
